Correct Network Extension Setup?

At the moment I have two routers in my network setup. The first is a TP-link router running the most up-to-date TP-link firmware, hooked up to my cable modem. The second is a D-link router, running DD-WRT firmware, connected via WAN port to a LAN port on the first router. The first router is set up with an L2TP automatic dialer connection. The second router is set up in Gateway operation mode, with automatic DHCP configuration.

This works fine except for 2 things:

1. Computers wired to the the second router are unable to see or communicate with those connected to the first, and vice versa. Essentially each router creates its own, separate network.

2. Port forwarding through the second router does not seem to work. Or rather, I'm not entirely sure how to properly forward ports through both routers at once. I've tried forwarding from the first to the second and from the second to the specific computer, but that doesn't seem to work.

The DD-WRT firmware has an option to specify the second router as a DHCP forwarder instead of a DHCP server, but it doesn't seem to work (and I could no longer access either router from a computer connected to the second router until I hard-reset it). Perhaps it only works with other DD-WRT routers?

Is there a better way to connect these 2 routers? Optimally, I'd like computers to communicate with each other across both routers. And what is the proper way of forwarding ports in such a setup?

Thanks!

Thanks! I didn't know about LAN-to-LAN connections. This is what I was looking for. This also solves my port forwarding issue. Thank you so much!

The upper floor has only a single LAN outlet which is wired to the main router downstairs, so I have to have both routers connected if I want both WiFi and wired internet upstairs.
