Hello,

I am having troubles sharing a folder between my desktop and a laptop on a local network.

Here is how things are wired, The desktop is connected to the DSL modem, and the laptop is connected to a wireless router, which is getting the internet connection from the modem itself.

On my desktop, i can see other devices connected to the modem, and on the laptop i can see other devices that are connected to the wireless router. But i never find my laptop or the wireless connected devices through my desktop and vice versa.

Is there a way to link my desktop and the laptop so i can share files between them?

I have little to no experience in networking, so i'd appreciate some help! Thank you!

Solution
then get a unmanaged switch like 4-8 ports plugs into router generate 1 port traffic (I have my desktop set up this way in my house (3 PCs) TV takes another, and 3rd is extension network cable for across the house with another AP router so the DHCPO is always controller by router and firewall is always there to protect you

[MODEM]----[ROUTER]----[switch]---PC's

Nevermind, solved it.

Solution:

- Disable DHCP server on the wireless router.
- Connect a second Ethernet cable other than the one providing internet connection to the router.

Now i can see all devices on the network and i can share files easily.

Yeah that is the ideal setup but there are limited amount of ports on my router that i'v taken up all the space on both the modem and the router :/
