Play overwatch with low settings, using a 1080ti, i'm getting sub 200 fps. Anyone know any reason as to why this could be happening? Got a 4690k cpu. Could it be an optimization issue on blizzard's end or nvidia's? I just bought the 1080ti and was expecting better performance than a 970.

Solution
OC your CPU and you may get a better FPS result.

The GTX 1080 ti FE is a beast and your gonna need a better CPU if you wanna aim for higher frame Counts. May also depend on the game engine, if its cpu heavy like GTA5 - But I doubt it is, since it's a FPS.

That's likely all your cpu can muster. I'm not sure what resolution you are playing at but by setting everything to low you are shifting the load to the cpu, you should verify that your gpu is the bottleneck before you go ahead and upgrade the gpu expecting better performance. It will likely perform better than the 970 if you turned up the settings which would shift the load to the gpu. And do you need 200fps? If your on a 60hz monitor that's utterly pointless.

My monitor is 1920x1080 and 144hz. I'm totally fine with getting 150-200fps, but I would like to know what could be the issue as to why i'm not hitting the fps limit in overwatch that I have set to 300.

I did do research before purchasing and I couldn't find anywhere that a 4690k will bottleneck a 1080ti at my resolution and any games that I play. My cpu isn't hitting 100% load consistently whenever I have checked it, I'll have to open resource monitor and let it run for a bit while i'm playing overwatch and see. There isn't anything running in the background either. I highly doubt overwatch's lowest settings are too much for a 4690k, doesn't seem likely.

A 4690k will bottleneck a 1080ti, under the right circumstances which you look to have achieved. Lowering the settings makes it more likely the cpu will become the bottleneck as the majority of those settings are gpu bound. At 1080p low settings I have no doubt a 1080 ti would manage 300fps or more in overwatch but only if the cpu will keep up with it. The higher the framerate the more draw calls for the cpu to calculate and thus higher load, which is why higher resolutions reduce cpu load and increase gpu load. Your research showed that a 4690k will not bottleneck a 1080 ti at low settings 1080p in overwatch? That's quite specific, where did you read that?

So can you explain how to know for sure my cpu is bottlenecking? I'm not reaching 100% cpu usage, im sitting at 75% average after playing a game of OW

Yeah I just realized resource monitor only averages the CPU usage of a program, I don't know how to average it all together in one slot. Here is a screenshot of msi afterburner.

The left of the graph at about 30% usage was while you were playing? The 95 is just a peak usage which I don't see on that graph. Could you turn on CPU usage monitoring as well? If you can play a match in overwatch for a few minutes with msi afterburner open, right after you play the game detach the graphs and maximize it , try get gpu usage and cpu usage in the same screenshot.

To turn on cpu monitoring go to settings, the monitoring tab, and check off cpu usage in the list.

every other hardware you have are bottlenecking the GPU.

i already saw some review where the GTX 1080 TI have the same FPS/Performance running at 1440p and 1080p.

some of the reviews was running with 5960X and 6900k, the best you can do is OC your CPU.

Alright, I overclocked my CPU yesterday night and I'm going to play with it a bit and see what my fps looks like over a few days. I was going to reinstall drivers for my GPU but evidence is pointing towards a definite cpu bottleneck. Good thing I am not finished upgrading my computer, i'm looking at a h270/z270 mobo with a 7700k. Thanks everyone for your help and sound advice.
