Do I Need a New PSU? (in the middle of a new build)

I am upgrading my mobo from an MSI Z77 Mpower to an MSI Z270 M7. I noticed on the new board there are connectors for a CPU1 (8 pin) and CPU 2 (4 pin). The old board had only 1 CPU connector (8 pin).

I have a ThermalTake Smart M 750W PSU (I know it's not the best). I am in the middle of the build right now, and my PSU has only one 8 pin cable for the CPU.

I do have on hand a cable that will split an 8 pin into an 8 pin and a 4 pin. I have the feeling this might address the issue, but I though I'd rather check first before making that decision to be on the safe side.

Otherwise, I'm afraid I might need a new PSU, but again, I wanted to check first.

Solution

yes just the 8 pin for "standard "overclocking should be fine

only using 8 pin here my 7700k does 5ghz no sweat

I would recommend getting something with the second connector then.

It's better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.

Plus, it leaves more headroom for the future.

Yeah, I've been looking into PSUs in between checking back here. If I have to go that route then I will. Just REALLY hoping not to for now.

mcnumpty23, just to make sure I am reading it right, you're saying that the 8 pin connector should be enough for the board if I am doing a "standard" OC, and some some crazy sh*t? I have that board and PSU, and I'm installing an i7 7700k with a Cryorig R1 Ultimate as well, and am really looking at an OC of around 4.8ghz, just to give a little more info on my end.

Thanks, that's actually good to know on both counts. Right now I am trying to get past an "overcurrent detected in USB, shutting down in 15 secs" problem and am searching for/trying solutions, but once I get it figured out I will come back to verify that the 8-pin is doing the job just fine.

try disconnecting the front usb ports

also make sure the little metal prongs on the rear io shield didnt slip into a usb port seen that before

also seen some one before with a msi board had taken off some plastic cap near the front usb header that they shouldnt have and put the front usb on the pins it revealed

Thanks, I was up late last night doing all you suggested and more. After speaking with MSI tech support once I exhausted everything I could check or find out about, the tech quickly agreed that the board was DOA.

Soooo, I guess I'll have to wait to reply about the whole 8 pin CPU thing until I recieve a new board (hopefully a working one), at which point I will try to follow up again.

Thanks so much for your help though, I am very appreciative of it.
