Hey all,

First off sorry if this is the wrong thread to post in, but I am thinking it is my GPU so I put this here

2 part question, I am having troubles video editing with HitFilm4 Express, it is running very slowly and makes me wait after almost any change, very slow. I would not mind upgrading my GPU as it is a few years old but I am not sure that is even the problem? Games run fine with my setup and nothing else is slow.

1, what should i upgrade to make editing smoother?
2. Is hitfilms 4 express the actual issuse, Is there a better free or low cost alternative out there?

(first time tying specccy, did it work?)

Anything else I did not mention just ask, and thanks in advance for any and all help!

OpenCL is a AMD thing / Nvidia. It's mainly AMD and open source where as CUDA is NVIDIA only and for years it was the only GPU acceleration add-on available. NVIDIA cards suck in OpenCL while AMD is extremely fast. On the flip side AMD does not have the option to support CUDA...So it's no clear winner unless the app only supports one or the other.

Seems like it's not a video card issue, more of a hard drive speed thing. But I see from the spec you are using a SSD which should resolve any sort of reading issues. So where are the files you are editing living and how big are they (like resolution, and file size)?

The only reason to upgrade the video card for editing is if GPU acceleration is supported (like CUDA or OpenCL). If not than a new card will not help much.

Since you have a decent card (Radeon 7000 series) 3GB. I wouldn't replace the card. I don't think that is the issue on why it is running slowly.

Question:
Is it choppy editing or just slow on exporting?

While editing it is very slow every time a make any change. Cut or slide the video and i wait about 4 seconds for it to catch up. Exporting is fine, takes a while but it seems that it always will take a while.

Also from what I have read and heard in videos from HitFilm4 Express it does use the GPU, I don' think they specifically use CUDA or OpenCL ( or just bits a pieces of both as they support both AMD and Intel?) Also I am pretty new to video editing and not sure if this is even the right place to ask about it. ha.
