Question regarding 970 power draw

My brother is trading his asus GTX 680 4gb and an old mouse for a Zotac gtx 970, wondering if this powersupply is good enough to handle it.

it recommends 500w with 40 amps and that is the PSU in his pc

From this review, it appears the combined +12V rating is 40A or 480W:

It's not a very detailed review, but they think the supply is ok. Certainly 480W on the +12V rails is plenty for a GTX 970 in a standard system.
If this system previously had the GTX 680, the GTX 970 uses substantially less power too.

With regular gaming a GTX 970 draws about 10w extra. Under synthetics a GTX 680 draws about 40w more. It is pretty safe to say if your PSU handled your system with a GTX 680 it will do just fine with a GTX 970.
