i3 4170 vs i5 2400

Hi people!
My son has been given an i3-4170 on an asrock H81m-hds motherboard with an R7 370 card by a friend who just upgraded.

I have a i5-2400 chip from a 2011 iMac sitting around doing nothing. I'm wondering if it's worth while putting in the i5 (I know I'd need to get a new cooler for the i5, the i3 cooler won't cut it).

His main use will be gaming, Day Z, Witcher 3, CODs, wow and Diablo 3

As Ecky stated, you indeed can't use the i5-2400 on that motherboard because it's a different socket. If you can find any cheap 1155 motherboards the i5-2400 is a more powerful CPU and would be better for gaming since it's a Quad core and you listed some games that would take advantage of this especially Witcher 3. Here is a comparison between the two showing the i5-2400 to be around 10-20% stronger > http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-2400-vs-Intel-Core-i3-4130/803vs1621
