Formatting an SD card is better than deleting file-by-file as it's less likely to lead to card errors, but any process which involves writing to the card (ie formatting, deleting, writing new data to it) leads to eventual wear-and-tear & ultimately card failure - - it's unavoidable.

It's important to remember that formatting is simply a writing-process just like deleting or creating new files. All of them have a wearing effect on the recording media inside the card. I wouldn't single-out formatting as being any worse than the other two processes in that respect.

the lifespan of a sd card is usually 2 to 4 years, so make it write more by formatting it should use the memory in it more so theoretically yes

since any sd now is so cheap, be concerned about it not lasting 5 years and only lasting 4, well, it is a bad idea to be concerned about this

That is excessive. And certainly causes more wear to the sdcard than necessary.

You would reformat it only, if you need a different file system. For example fat32 doesn't support files larger than 4GB, so you reformat it to ntfs or exfat.
