HDD started making grinding/buzzing noises

Hi,

About a week ago my 3TB WD Caviar Black HDD started occasionally making these kinds of grinding/buzzing noises that are very reminiscent of the sounds floppy drives used to make during operation. I'm pretty sure that specific drive is the culprit since the sound also triggers when I open the big storage folders on the drive and run scans on it.

After some digging through Google, the answer seemed to be that the HDD was overloaded and/or fragmented. My drive was down to 1% free space, so I thought "Yeah, that must be it".

Having cleared significant space (it's up to 15% free space now) and defragmented the drive several times, the noises persisted. SMART checks showed green across the board, and an error check found no bad sectors.

Just to be sure, I also ran these checks on its 1TB neighbor, and came up with the same results.

The drives are just over 2 years in use, so it's not an age/wear issue either.

Does anyone have any ideas what else could be causing these noises?
Thanks.

I listened to audio clips online of HDD's with failing bearings, and this noise sounds nothing like it.

The clips I heard featured a continuous, high-pitched whirr/whine, while the noise my HDD made was an intermittent "dzzt" type noise.
