I have a 500GB WD drive that keeps failing for some reason, it started failing when trying to copy files to that drive showing the "Cannot copy file.doc: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)"
So after that I removed all of the files that were already on it, went to properties and ran chkdsk from there, and, well, it's been 2 days already and chkdsk is stuck at 76% on stage 4, the HDD led is lit and I can hear the drive working but as I can see that chkdsk isn't going anywhere

reading articles some users said something about isolating the bad blocks or sectors but honestly I don't know how to do that, the drive has 2 partitions, 16gb for Windows XP and the rest for files

Hello,
According to me, spending money to recover data is not a good deal. There are many reasons due to which hard drives become unrecognized or dead. Before purchasing any recovery tool, you must do below steps:
• Use hard drive on other computer or laptop
• Check USB plug whether working fine or not
Still you are unable to access external hard drive then you must read this article: http://www.savechazz.com/how-to-recover-files-from-dead-hard-drive
It is helpful in recovering more than 300 file types within fraction of time. Hope you find this reply somewhat helpful.
Thanks

I tried to boot and it says unreadable hard drive, removed it from the computer and put it on mine, appears as RAW partition, can't format anymore
