The current processor I have is a AMD FX-6300 6 Cores 3.5 GHz

My choice would be an AMD FX-8350 or above. No Ryzen because not going to change motherboards.

Should I really change processors, or is it not worth it?

Is it true that AMD's FX-9s are really hot, and will a water cooler help it.

System Specs:

Processor: AMD FX-6300 6 Cores 3.5 GHz
Motherboard: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3
Memory: 8GB DDR3 (2x4GB sticks)
Graphics Card: HIS R9 380 IceQ X² OC 2GB
Storage: Toshiba 2TB
Power Supply: CX600 80 PLUS Bronze 600W
Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit

In my opinion no, it's not worth it. That's because besides the CPU, you have a 380 2gb videocard. That is around a 960/1050 Ti level of performance. So then the question is will the 8xxx CPU increase your game performance with that 380 enough over what you are getting now to justify the cost? I think the answer is no. If there were games that were unplayable on your CPU but playable on the 8350, then you could make a case for it. But what's going to happen is you'd gain a percentage boost in performance that'll translate to a few frames per second, which means the games will effectively be equally playable or equally unplayable on both CPUs. If it doesn't run well on the 6300 it won't run well on the 8350 for the most part. I wouldn't bother with a 9xxx.

This is all from a gaming centric point of view. You didn't mention software so I assume games.

I agree with this, don't bother you won't see much gaming performance boosts what so ever... Best off waiting for Ryzen 5 to come out soon or buy something Skylake/Kaby Lake now. If you're on a tight budget i suggest the Pentium G4560, it outperforms the FX 6300 in every single game and almost all synthetic benchmarks, what's more, it's really cheap. It also means you will have a new socket that has plenty of future upgrade paths like an i5/i7 if you ever need. Hope this helps :)
