Hey,

Im just wondering if it's possible to have two routers in one house and how difficult would it be to do?

I have one downstairs and I am wanting one upstairs in my bedroom, I already have an Ethernet cable connected to it running up into my room for my PC. I want this router so I can connect my PC to it and all the other wireless things I have in my room such as phones etc.

If it's possible, would I be able to change things such as settings on the router which would be in my room without effecting the one downstairs and the devices connected to it? Also would it make the one downstairs slower or impact the speed in anyway?

Solution

1. Yes, probably
2. Yes.
3. Until it moves out of range of that router, and connects to something else.

Main reason is the router downstairs is dual band and devices in my room for some reason don't like it, I have searched for hours and watched the activity page for the router and noticed as soon as my devices go from 2.4ghz to 5ghz, anything to do with the internet will lag and come to a stop, this is extremely annoying alone. I understand you can change this through the router however other people in the house don't want me to do this as it effects there devices.

I want my own router so I can just change this and other settings to what I want without bothering anyone else in the house, would I be able to do this with the method you said?

Change settings?
Not really. Everything is still mainly controlled from the main router. The second one upstairs is mostly just an access point.

What issues are you devices seeing with the dual band from the main router?
Lock them onto on band. Probably the 2.4GHz. The 5GHz is good if you are in the same room, but 2.4 travels farther through the house.

I don't know what the issue is, I've just seen that whenever one of my devices (phones or tablets) changes into the 5ghz band, say if I'm watching YouTube or a video on Facebook, it'll just stop playing and continue to buffer for a few minutes until it changes back down to 2.4ghz, things won't load on the internet or it'll be awfully slow. My PC is fine as that's wired connection.

I mostly use my phone which is an iPhone 7, I understand you can lock it on the router using the admin page however other members of the house don't want me to due to the fact they are mostly next to the router so it's faster for them, I don't think it's possible To lock devices to a specific band using just the device itself, so I don't know if there is anyway to work around this. I was hoping I'd just be able to get a second to router and modify the settings such as locking it to 2.4ghz.

Do you think when it switches to 5ghz it slows right down due to the router not being in the same room?

Yes, that might be the case.
So, since you already have the ethernet cable in that space, try it with another router or Access Point.
Router instructions above.

Forgot about this thread due to my internet and pc having issues.

So If I bought one of the asus routers, connected it via Ethernet cable in my bedroom, set it up as an access point, would I be able to do the following;

- Set it up to only use the 2.4Ghz band
- Connect my PC to the access point using a wired connection
- Make it so my phone and other devices only stay connected to the access point and doesn't bother with the main router downstairs

Also would I be able to do all of this without effecting the router downstairs or loosing speed?

Sorry if these questions seem dumb, I just have no idea how networking works.
