Hi I've hadthe same system running for 4 years with no problem. Today I decided to clean the CPU and since then the system won't recognize my second stick of ram.

My mobo is asus z87-pro
I5 4670k with evo 212
2x4gb gskill rip jaw x

I've tried different slots. Also individual sticks that seem to run fine. which knocks out the theory that I have a bad stick without touching them.

Any idea what went wrong there? I'm confused. I have xmp on but it only recognize one stick still

Update. It would only recognize both sticks in single Channel. Dual channel it'll only read 4gb.. don't know what's going on. Anyone have answers please?

Yea I used compressed air to get some dust out. Didn't press anything. I had to reseat and clean CPU pins a few times. System didn't boot from the get go. I finally looked up the error code 55.

So I pulled out the sticks and have them in individually. Which worked. Once the system booted and I put in another stick it only read 1 stick. Now it would only run in single channel instead of dual channel. Problem is I got another 8gb coming. It would be a problem running 2 dual channel

I had to clean it as the thermal solution was getting old so I swapped it out with new thermal paste. I accidentally got some on the pins. But managed to get it off. Once I got it to work i started to get problems. Somehow it affected the ram for whatever reason.

It affects the RAM because the memory controller is on the CPU and you may have damaged/bent a pin when cleaning the paste. It could also be some residue that prevents good contact.

Can you explain why you had to replace the thermal paste? Because you dislodged the cooler? It normally doesn't have to be replaced during the life of the cooler.

I see. I may have damaged it. I changed to a better thermal paste as I was using the vanilla one. I had to use a small bristle brush to get the stuff out. So far I can't get the ram to work in dual channel mode. It won't read the second stick. Do you have any suggestions?

I see. yea i tried cleaning them. Don't think the pins are bent as they are not straight pins like the AMD processors are. I think the thermal paste i accidentally got on the pins, despite how much i cleaned them still messed the ram up somehow.
