Internet speed increaces by order of magnitude if I plug directly into the modem. Do I need a gigabit router?

I wondered why my modem's link light blinked amber instead of green like the others today, so I looked it up and discovered that amber means it's working in 10/100 MB mode, and green means it's working in 1000 MB mode.

Wondering if I even got service that could use 1000 MB mode, I directly connected my desktop which has a gigabit ethernet port to the modem. The light turned green. I ran a speed test. I got 134 Mbs instead of my normal 13 Mbs. I tested all my other devices that use Ethernet. They all got 134 Mbs too.

Clearly my Lynksys E1200 router is a bottleneck on my internet speed. Do I need to get a Gigabit router to use more than 100 MBs? Or can I get a non Gigabit router made relatively recently and still get that 134 Mbs?

Does the following link match your router?

http://www.linksys.com/us/p/P-E1200/

Your router is listed as having 4 Fast Ethernet ports.

You need 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports.

Example:

Also: take a look at the section on LAN Ports in the following link:
