If it's an original, getting on for five years old so you shold be able to store music, pictures, etc. on the SdCard but not store or run Apps from it. In Settings>More> Storage it should show in the list but could be unmounted. If that's the case, try mounting it.

It's only the mosre recent flavours of Android that allow the choice between internal storage to run apps or portable to store personal files.

Post back the Android system numbers from Settings>More>About Device, please.
