dwm.exe using up too much CPU.

So i recently started having trouble with my PC dropping performance drastically after about 30 minutes of use. I can also trigger the bad performance by running a game which will instantly cause my PC to lag until restart. But recently the problem has been getting worse and it does it even on restart.

I have an I5 3570K OC 4.2GHz with heat sink
8gb Corsair RAM
8gb Patriot RAM
an SSD and HDD 1TB
CX750 PSU
gtx 1060 6gb
ASROCK Z77 Extreme 4 motherboard.

I've managed to narrow it down to being dwm.exe that is causing the issue. Whenever i get the lag it uses 20-30 CPU usage. I have also reinstalled windows on the PC so im not sure if it is a software issue or not.

Ive also found that when I use windows basic the lag goes, but it doesn't let me swap back to Aero. This isn't really an option for me as the screen tearing in windows basic is too much to handle.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as this has been going on for weeks and I just cant figure it out.

If you don't mind using the Windows Classic theme, try this:

Start, right click Computer, and click Properties.
Click Advanced System Settings and under the "Performance" option, click Settings.
Select "Adjust for best performance" and click OK.

Doing this will disable the dwm.exe file and hopefully resolve your issue.

Yeah I realised this but for me the screen tearing is unbearable. Especially when watching videos. Also I dont really like the idea of my computer being faulty and it only working on this certain setting. I have a relatively good PC and shouldn't have to sacrifice features because of this issue.

If you want to disable the dwm.exe file without switching to Windows Classic, open the start Menu and type "Services". Hit Enter.
Look for "Desktop Window Manager" and click on it. Click the button that says "Stop Service." You can disable it from running on startup by right clicking on it and going into its properties.

Whenever i do this it automatically switches it to windows classic. I dont think there a way of not having dwm.exe without screen tearing.

Then you could either try restarting the process (from the same "Services" window) or go into the Performance options as I mentioned earlier and disable all of the fancy effects that you can live without. If these don't work, then it could be a sign that your hard disk is failing.

(Your PC doesn't have to be that old for the hard drive to fail, on a second note. I learned that the hard way.)
