Multiple SSID setup for different usage.

Hi, can I know whether I can set up different ssid for gaming and besides gaming usage? Like 2.4g/5g. Or how to set up gaming as first priority while others streaming/downloading doesn't affect game's ping. QOS/Traffic shaping/Bandwidth control works?

If you have a network controller you can set your bandwidth priorities or if your NIC supports QoS you can enable and configure it keep any priority applications to the 5ghz band if your router doesn't intelligently place applications on the specific bands based on priority or QoS configurations. ssid is just the name of identification (name of the specific band) and each channel only gets one.

If you have a dual band router you could set it up so that only you use one or the other (2.4GHz or 5GHz) and everyone else is on the other. For gaming you do not want anyone else using your bandwidth or increasing your latency, which is already an issue for gaming when using wireless. QoS is not a good solution to make wireless gaming work better when there are multiple users.

So then you would set up an SSID on the radio that you will use that is different from the other and obvious for other users not to mess with -- like Private_Gaming and keep the passkey a secret only known to you. The other SSID would be something else and everyone that uses it will get the passkey.

Assuming you have a good plan with your ISP, say at least 10-20Mbps, your best gaming experience will be this an Ethernet cable connection or if not feasible then use a pair of AV1200 or better powerline adapters -- either will have MUCH better latency than wireless.

If you have a limited bandwidth plan, any other users will adversely impact your gaming, although most modern Internet connections are adequate unless you are on DSL at the fringes of the provider area far from a CO.

A "decent" ap? no that's terrible. I know it's possible but it's not best practice and not suggested unless those bands are each operating on different channels therefore identifying individual bands...

Unless you purchase decent equipment and have relative isolation. Wireless is 1ms greater than my wired......

For gaming any other users will make it very poor. You must have an exceptional situation. I have diagnosed and repaired hundreds of wireless installs for gaming issues -- 1ms, I call BS on that. I can bring a dozen or so unbiased mods in (or our resident wireless/networking wizard bill001g) to explain the error of your ways. In my limited 30+ year experience, I totally disagree that gaming could ever get close to 1ms over wired unless there is a significant defect in the Ethernet wiring.

If opening a ssid for gaming and keep it private but other ssid is using heavily, will it affect my latency?

Not if you are on a different frequency and the only user.

Honestly it depends on the bandwidth you receive from your ISP for example I get 250mbs at my house, when I have a full house I can have 3-4 phones and 2 or 3 tablets connected to either the 2.4 or 5ghz bands not either or due to nic limitations but even with all of them streaming videos, video chatting, or whatever at minimum (I've noticed) I'm still left with about 140mbs to my rig. your bandwidth is in total not per individual band as that's whats coming through your line and you have to draw from (like a well). But being on your own band will reduce overhead as Beast basically said as it would be you but if your connection is being heavily utilized you just need to know how much bandwidth is going to spared. here is a good forum thread I suggest you take a look it has some good info in it and then if you want look into bandwidth limitations maybe through a network controller if you have one or can get one. at http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f222/high-ping-while-gaming-when-others-use-internet-682439.html

RealBeast what would like me provide to upset your bs call. My situation may be unique but obviously not to me, I have no other wireless in my area and my house house is kitted out with R500s. Let me know what test results you would like, I have no reason to bullshit anyone, my latency on wireless is 1ms more than on wired. Hit me up if you would like my CV, I prefer not to boast on public forums.

Sorry I missed the "<" symbol, given that its probably 0.3ms on wired (we can discuss why if you're truly that bored) and 2ms on wireless I think you are splitting hairs, buy it or not, it's not really that important to me to argue about 1.7ms instead of 1ms. I can not personally believe that less than a millisecond makes any difference in any real world scenarios, except perhaps market trading (And certainly not enough to call someone out on it but I guess we must be different).

Oh poor salty man (or child, I care not) Gaming was your agenda not mine, I never mentioned it only your misconception that wireless is always so much worse than wired, which its not, you just need to know what youre doing. Your ignorance and apparent arrogance is your problem not mine, good luck with that.
