Hi just a quick question about SLI, can you mix and match ANY two cards of the same type?

i currently have a single MSI 980ti gaming 6gb and want to SLI as an improvement rather than spending loads of money on a new 10 series card, im looking on ebay and can see a reference design 980ti, can i mix the MSI gaming 980ti with the reference design in SLI?

many thanks

Solution
So long as the base chip and memory are the same there is no issue.
So yes, you would be able to SLI those two cards. Do note the clock speeds on the faster card would slow to match the slowest card.
As far as I know, yes.
Also as far as I know, both will then run at same clock speed (whichever is lower) thus your MSI gaming one will get underclocked a bit.

Also bear in mind that some games don't support SLI and returns for it are most likely between 30% to 60% improvement over single one.

After that, it's all your choice.

It is best to get the same exact card, if you can. So, that way there is minimal variance between the GPUs. But, you should be fine getting the reference.
