New M/B, same CPU. Worth it?

Hi there,

so I have a fairly old custom PC with a Phenom II X6 1045t, in an old Gigabyte M720-US3 M/B which only supports DDR2 RAM (16 GB installed at 667 MHz), and 3 Gbps SATA (I also have a SSD).

The performance is still bearable, but I'd love to squeeze a bit more out of it (mostly for large DB apps and Lightroom).

Is there a reason of let's say swapping the M/B to sth. like ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 and get faster DDR3 RAM, while keeping the same CPU? Would there be a significant performance improvement?

Or maybe I should just think about getting everything upgraded?

Thanks a million in advance!

A switch from DDR2 ram to DDR3 ram alone would not have any noticeable improvement or any at all. its best to get everything upgraded considering how old that system is

If you get a new motherboard, you will most likely have to get a new cpu that fits that socket. The cpu would help boost performance much more than ram alone ever would. You would also have to get new ram too though, which mostly helps with multitasking on your computer while CPU mostly helps with overall performance. The motherboard is, in simple terms, just the tool being used to share information and use the more important modular parts.

The thing with the CPU is that it should be OK for the new board too. So the upgrade would only be the board (with all the additional bells and whistles, such as faster SATA) and the faster RAM.

However indeed, I'm not sure if the performance improvement would be noticeable.
