I need help deciding what to get, the 980 is a year old (used) for $196 and the 1060 has 3GB and a backplate brand new for $214. Can't really decide which to get I want the one with the best performance, it really comes down to backplate vs VRAM. I play mostly open world survival games like ARK, Conan Exiles, DayZ so on. I can't seem to find a definitive answer, all I know is the 3gb version of the 1060 has less cuda cores and the 980 is either faster or the same speed as the 1060. They are both MSI because my case is red so I need to get it for aesthetics.

Definitely the GTX 980. A GTX 1060 6GB would be closer to the same performance but i wouldn't get a 3GB over it. On that note, i would not recommend a 3GB card this gen for 1080p or higher if you want above Medium settings in your games. Most new AAA games are already pushing above 3 often and i talk from experience. Games at 1080p that push above 3GB for me: Witcher 3 (~3.5GB), Star Citizen (~4.1GB), Total War Warhammer (~3.3GB), GTA V (~4.1GB), Assassin's Creed Syndicate (~4.0GB) and ARK (~5.0GB not kidding). A GTX 980 is definitely more powerful than a 1060 3GB to begin with but the fact that the Nvidia made a 3GB card this gen especially since the 1050 TI has 4GB is beyond me... Hope this helps :)
