Hello, I'm trying to figure out what GPU to get for my build, it's and old PC that I got from a friend a couple years ago and I'm trying to upgrade. I've got and AMD FX(tm)-8100 Eight core processor, a NVIDA Geforce GTX 560 Ti, 8GB of RAM, a EVGA 600 Bronze PSU, and a Gigabyte motherboard (can't remember what model). I was thinking about getting the GTX 1050 Ti on amazon for ~$160, but I'm not sure if my PC could handle it. My budget is around $200, if you could help me that'd be great. I'm open to any suggestions and ideas!

Solution
Different tier cards mate, the rx470 is better than the 1050ti just because it is.
The 1060 3gb is better than either of them but is pretty much a $200 card.
I just threw the 470 out there because its the same price as the 1050ti you're looking at , is plainly 25-30% stronger & makes more sense.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I thought the 1050 Ti was good because it's 4GB. I don't understand why 3GB would be better than 4GB even though it's a 1060. Why would the RX 470 be better than the 150 Ti? Just trying to understand.

Nvidia has a memory compression scheme they use for these 1060s, which is why they use the odd 3gb vram whilst AMD uses 4gb for their equivalent cards. My approach is if you need to save money, an RX 460 or GTX 1050 is the way to go. Otherwise get the RX 470 4gb.

I don't advise anyone to get the 1050 Ti most times, because it's not really fast enough to be in the smooth 1080p gaming category with the better cards, but not inexpensive enough to be the best low budget card. If you didn't have an FX 8xxx series CPU and you didn't have a good power supply, then the 1050 Ti would be the best you could use. But you do have those things so the RX 470 is the price/performance winner for you.

because the amount of vram tells you nothing about how powerful the card actually is

a 1060 3gb is A LOT faster then a 1050 ti with 4gb of vram

in terms of actual performance

1060 > rx 470 > 1050 ti

regardless of vram amount
