Heyo, questions about CPU Temps and Cooler.

So I recently bought a i76700k and slapped my Noctua DH-15 On it.

Ran prime95 today only to have to turn off prime95 because my temps were showing the the 89C range. (HWINFO)

Did I apply thermal paste wrong, did I mount wrong?

Sorry, really concerned. I'm hoping it's not a bad chip.

I should also point out that I used Coolermasters brand of thermal paste, and it seemed a bit more...liquidy than others.

It didn't concern me at the time, but now I think it was bad thermal paste.

Nope, thermal paste may make a couple of degree's difference, but not a massive amount, those temps are normal for full stress load, and that's been intel's biggest problem since Haswell (4770K), they use too much and a rubbish TIM (thermal interface material) under the IHS, this is why me and a lot of other people De-lid there CPU's and replace that TIM, I replace mine with AS5 and dropped Prime96 load temps by 30oC. 95oC down to 65oC overclocked to 4.4ghz running Prime85.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the thermal paste I ordered was complete rubbish, thanks. Ill repaste it in a few hours and do a hour long test and come back.

If it doesn't work, than I'm calling bad chip or dead cpu cooler, but I doubt either of those.

Thanks!

Thgere are shops like overclockers UK that will do it for you for about £10, or you can buy easy de-lidding tools from ebay for about £6, dead easy to do, just have to be careful that's all, and once its done, just test it, if all is good, just glue the lid back on, I just glued my lid back on with a tiny spot of exoy in each corner.

Reapplied thermal paste and also did research on which Prime95 to use, as explained by this guide here:

After testing with Small FTT for an hour on P9526.6, my maximum temp was PEAK 81 (Fans catching up, also, when testing with ANYTHING past 26.6 it would still hit 86-89, so throttling wasn't an issue.) and my average temp was 72-73.

So far, I'm satisfied with the CPU i've bought and doubt I'll ever reach those temps in situations such as gaming and etc.

A big shoutout to CompuTronix for helping all the people with i7-6700K's: http://www.tomshardware.com/community/profile-111321.htm

I will be testing out De-Lidding one day, but not in the forseeable future.
