Hello everybody,

since HP does not allow PSU upgrades for HP Z600(650W is the only option), I want to get some information on the available ATX replacements for the HP PSU. From what I've read and seen, there are ways around HP's custom connectors. First of all, I found some adapter cables that can be used to utilize the 18-pin power connector on my mobo:

Now, all I need to find is a suitable PSU to match EPS/SSI requirements for server system boards/dual xeons. There are plenty ATX EPS12V compatible PSUs, let's take this one:

http://www.corsair.com/en-us/rm-series-rm850-80-plus-gold-certified-power-supply

I was wondering if this is something I could use with HP's Z600? I take it you need to get an adapter to even connect this to an 18-pin HP mobo but what about peripheral connectors(USB, molex, SATA, SAS)? Will I be able to connect them using this PSU or I do somehow need a separate adapter for each cable? From the HP Z600 PSU specs sheet it seems like it doesn't have anything special so architecture-wise it should work with the mobo. Thanks in advance for your input.

Regards,
Peter

Power pinouts may be different on the earlier models.

I doubt that adapter will work.

You are right SR-71(love the nickname, btw) so I ordered another one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/131656549684
ATX 24Pin Female to 18Pin Male + Dual Molex to 6Pin Adapter Power Cable HP Z600

Now that I've got that covered, what other connectors do I need to look into to make sure I am able to power on not just the mobo, but also CPU, memory, SATA drives, and chassis buttons?

you now need the 14 pin female to 8 pin male and 6 pin male for cpu and motherboard power. its the second connector on hp's psu. you can get them off ebay for around 8 bucks, that will allow you to use the oem psu. the part number for it is hp 534480-001

sorry I meant to say its a 14 pin male to 8 and 6 pin male part number 534480-001, as for the 24 pin power connector on the backplane panel, I have been unable to find any kind of part number so I would suggest not using a hp power supply, but the replacement needs to be a wide ranging pfc eps12v I believe to replace the oem.
