Looking for an AC modem/router combo that can be used without a computer

I'm looking for some advice. I mentioned in another post that my parents are looking into getting rid of AT&T Uverse (especially now with their dispute with CBS; both are at fault) and going with Time Warner Spectrum. After chatting with Spectrum I found out that you have to buy your own router as they don't provide one. The tech suggested looking at cable modem/router combos and I'm looking at ones that will get every band through AC. However, what I'm having trouble with is finding something that can be used without a computer. Currently, we have 3 desktop computers running Windows XP (which I've already been told is not compatible with Spectrum), one late 2011 Macbook Pro, and two Toshiba laptops (one Windows 7 Professional 64 bit; the other Windows 10 Professional 64-bit). I can hook something up to the Macbook without having to worry about taking it down later, but can't really do that with the Toshiba laptops. One laptop is in our dining room and gets moved when we go on vacations and at holidays. Not a great place to hook up wifi. I was looking to hook things up in my sister's bedroom since it's vacant. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

What do you mean use the router without a computer? You mean set it up without a computer? You need some device connected to etherent to first set it up.

Your biggest mistake so far is getting advice from time warner. Most of those half-wits know nothing more then how to crimp a coax cable and plug the modem into a power outlet.

First and foremost you dont want a combo device, combos are low performance devices and usually low quality. Time Warner only uses combo modem/routers for routers so that is llikely all the tech knows.
You are much better off getting something like a zoom 5345 modem and your own router. Amazon has the tm-ac1900 for $80, this is just a t-mobile badged verison of teh $150 Asus RT-AC68U which is a very good...

A wired connection is required to do setup for almost any router. Other than that, a traditional computer isn't required. I would still recommend a discrete router separate from the modem. If you buy a combo unit, it is much less flexible if you change away from coax ISP.

Time warner has no way to block your XP computers if behind a router. They just dont want to say they support it due to how insecure and vulnerable XP is at this point.

Why do you want a router without a computer?

"Currently, we have 3 desktop computers running Windows XP (which I've already been told is not compatible with Spectrum)"
Bullsh*t
(The truth: The software they provide [that you don't need to install.] is not compatible.)

"I can hook something up to the Macbook without having to worry about taking it down later, but can't really do that with the Toshiba laptops."
I don't know what you mean by that but most laptop's have ethernet ports to communicate with/setup the router.
