Hello, I have started helping a friend's business with updating their network. Currently they are running everything off of a Windows 2000 server Workgroup that just does simple file and print sharing.

The majority of the workstations are Windows 10, but there are a couple Windows 8 machines around and even an old Windows Vista and XP machine.

I have started researching moving them to a domain but realized quickly that this is much more complicated than I originally thought. They already purchased a new server with Windows Server 2016 Essentials installed and I would prefer to use that.

I know major research is in order and was wondering if there are any online resources or recommended books to get me on the path. Is something like "networking for dummies" even worth a look? Currently all they would like to do beyond file and print sharing is maybe host their Office 365 credentials, simplify workstation backups and have the ability to deploy updates and software easier.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

There are a large number of books on Active Directory, I suggest you start there. You're going to run in to an issue with the functional level of the active directory due to the age of some of the workstations. Vista and up is ok, anything older need to be upgraded.

For books, I suggest you look at Amazon and look at books with at least 4 start reviews and lots of them. There is some wisdom in following the herd when you are starting out.

Thanks alot for the suggestions. I will check out Amazon for some active directory books. The older workstations definitely can be replaced. I think they just still exist because they still work.
