Big difference between these two 1070's?

Solution
NVidia cooling on the "founders" looks nice, but lacks when the card is pushed. Look at the 1080ti review on Tom's, they had to watercool it just to be able to really push it and the founders edition starts to get loud and hot.

There is nothing wrong with the Founder's Edition card if that is what you want. Like getochkn, I wouldn't buy one myself though.

The third party cards like the EVGA SC your friend recommended run cooler, quieter, and come with factory overclocks so they usually get a couple more FPS in most games. It's typically not a massive difference but something like 3-5 more FPS is typical for the third party cards.

If you are interested in overclocking yourself the third party cards do this better too. The Founder's Edition cards are able to reach similar maximum overclocks but they aren't able to stay at those clock speeds because they get too hot and thermal throttle. Many of the custom cards are able to maintain these max overclocks without any thermal throttling.
