which one to buy to save some bucks ,7700k or 6700k ?

7th generation CPU has got nothing too much noticeable.
1. Optane storage -> way costlier than we ever thought.
2. More PCIe Lanes -> both average z270 and z170 motherboards have 3 PCIEx16 ports
3. Performance->6700k can be easily overclocked to 4.2 Ghz and 4.2Ghz performance of 6700k, 7700k is same. I am not interested to Overclock air (5GHz).
Then I think buying a 6700k is no loss at all, also it will allow me to save some money in the motherboard. I am going to buy PC in 5-10 days, What are your verdicts?

  1. Which OS are you going to use? If running Windows 7 or 8.X your only option is 6th Gen, if Windows 10 any CPU would work.
  2. with 7700k not only you save more bucks but you get more bang for your buck too , at least that's the way it is in my country ; the difference in price is marginal and 7700k gives you more room to overclock

    they are only advertised as such. if you install a second gpu it's gonna be a 8x-8x setup . apparently it's only the uber expensive 2011-3 socket that allows you to have multiple 16x graphic cards .
  4. There really isn't much of an advantage if you overclock them both to the same clock rate. If you have a really high end GPU you'll get about a 1.5% increase in game performance at the same clock rate.

    That is because 2011 v3 has a true 28 or 40 lanes depending on the CPU. The consumer oriented chips only have 16 direct lanes plus another 4 lanes for the chipset. The chipsets which advertise 20 lanes don't actually have 20 lanes to the CPU. They have four lanes via DMI 3.0. Those four lanes are then shared among multiple devices. Because most devices don't need a full PCIe x4 bandwidth 24/7. So someone expecting to connect a high IO server with a Z270 chipset with multiple NVMe SSD, 10 GbE and Thunderbolt 3.0 are going to be sorely disappointed.

    I didn't know all that , thanks for the informative post ; i previously thought that was all the burden of motherboard's chipset and not the cpu ..


    I think intel should eliminate the unnecessary integrated graphics on the i5 and i7 , so that they could make room for more useful stuff on the 1151 LGA , i hope intel reads this .

    That would be nice. You can vote with your wallet and buy the AMD Ryzen R5 series when they come out. As only the APU models will have integrated graphics.

    So apparently If I buy 6700k , I loose only by 5-10% performance . Only Problem is motherboard prices are higher.

    You only lose that much performance when you look at the differences in stock speeds or maximum potential overclock speeds. If you have them both overclocked to the same clock rate. Differences are 0% to 1.5%.

    While 5Ghz isn't done much. Lets look at something more moderate. The 7700K should be able to do 4.6Ghz without breaking much of a sweat. While the 6700K will be a little furnace gulping down electricity.
