Problem finding genuine code

I recently turned on my lap top with runs on windows 7 and it says that my product code needs put in I don't have that since the windows was installed prior to purchase how do I get this code

Does it say that Windows need activating ?
If you bought the laptop with win7 already installed , then it would already have been activated and you should not need to do it again.
Start/right click on Computer/Properties

It will be located on a sticker somewhere on the laptop. Either on the bottom, under the battery or sometimes under a memory/hdd access panel.

the product code now a days for laptops are embedded in the bios, so if you've reformatted, you need to use the recovery partition to re-install windows, or get your're manufacturer specific copy of windows, you cant just download any old version and install it, my laptop, (Packard bell) I can download my version of windows 7 from their website.

That didnt really start till windows 8. Iirc 7 didnt have the ability to pull an embedded key from bios. Win 7 laptops still used a coa sticker with the product key.
