Hi All,
I am currently running a Q6600 with considerable overclock on a Gigabyte MOBO with good DDR3 RAM BUT new(ish) games are struggling, e.g. Arkham Knight, Fallout 4

I have always tried to maximise my bang for buck by buying used parts from ebay or CEX, I can get an early i5 (like an i5 750) and an 1156 MOBO for maybe under £100 but will I see much difference, obviously I intend to overclock, my Q6600 is running @ 3.4Ghz

By getting a 1156 Mobo will I be limiting my options, I'd like SATA3 as I have 2 SSD's which aren't getting the best support from SATA2.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That's the sort of info I'm looking for. I've seen an i5 750 for £20 with a year warranty but if I can get a better 4th Gen for £50 and a MOBO would cost the same then I'm up for that. I also need to bear in mind that I'd like to keep the DDR3 RAM FOR NOW other wise it becomes a more expensive proposition.

New games are still going to struggle on that i5.

If you have a small budget and are buying used parts the minimum I would buy is an i5-2500k or i7-2600k Even those can be a bit weak in some titles. If you can afford an i5-4460 or better that would be a FAR FAR better choice. Yes it will still use DDR3

how overclockable would something like an i7 2670 be, I can get one for £28

Hi LucoTF
Thanks for your interest, I don't mean to be rude, how is a dual core processor going to be faster than a Quad core going at almost the same speed?

Because you cannot compare clock speed across generations or even different brands, its only relative to the processor that its running.

It may have 2 less cores, but it also has a significantly higher IPC (instructions per clock) so for every bit of that mhz clock speed its doing 2-3x the work.

Not rude at all, it's your money and you should be wise in how you spend it :)

The G4560 is actually a dual core with hyperthreading, so for gaming it's very close to the i3-6100.

You could probably find an older i5 and motherboard for around the same price... for example:

i5-3470 £55 https://uk.webuy.com/product.php?sku=SCPUINTI53470A
gigabyte H61 board £40: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gigabyte-GA-H61M-DS2-Rev-5-0-Socket-LGA1155-Motherboard-/302259260116?hash=item46600e4ad4:g:jLQAAOSw4CFY0Tal

Gaming performance would be pretty similar for either choice - please feel free to check around on youtube and confirm this yourself. You would lose two ram slots and SATA3 by going with that 5 year old cpu/mobo combo though.

That is a very good point. I've only got 8 (2 x 4) Gb of RAM @ present but don't want to be limited & I definitely want SATA3,
