Requirements:

  • * No case restrictions.
    * Fine with air or water cooling (closed/sealed loop). Don't want to do my own custom loop though.
    * I mainly care about lower temp, but something that isn't a jet engine would be nice as well.
    * Budget is <= $200 CAD.
    * I don't care at all about aesthetics/look. It can be a gross looking hunk of metal as long as it has good performance :)

I've tried searching around but now I have too much data and have no idea what to pick. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Solution
I would de-lid it, replace with Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, then pair with the Noctua NH D15 or BeQuiet Dark Pro 3. Which should all be able to be done within your budget.
I think getting it up to 5GHz is going to come down to whether or not you got a chip that overclocks well. If it does, and you don't want to do a custom loop, then go with a large closed loop. This will give you plenty of cooling and still be silent.

I personally use the corsair H110, it's a 280mm radiator, so two 140mm fans. Makes almost no noise and runs super cool.

Might want to take a look at http://www.anandtech.com/show/7738/closed-loop-aio-liquid-coolers

H100 is a crappy cooler.
it does not have a radiator, it has aluminum joke in the form of radiator. the fans on it are not even mediocre, they are crap.
It is the worst performer at highest noise among it's shinny toy siblings in the form of NZXT, Arctic, TT and other rebrands of asetek and coolit crap coolers

I would agree, maybe try Liquid Metal as another option of thermal paste.

I had to look up de-lidding. Scary! I'll have to think more on that. I get nervous just putting thermal paste on before the heatsink+fan! :p

Ah yeah that's probably a good course of action. Thanks! :)

Delidding is fun, and then you can count yourself as one of the "cool" kids. ;)
