Something wrong with memory. Not really sure what to do.

Hello forum,

I built a PC back in september with the following specs
I5 6600K
ASRock Z170 Extreme4 Skylake ATX Motherboard
Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz CL15 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit - Black
GTX 1060
EVGA SUPERNOVA 650
SEAGATE 2TB SSHD HYBRID

I have been experiencing ram issues that started near the beginning where I would get random unexplained game crashes near constantly and after using the windows memory test and memtest86 it told me there was a problem with the ram, so I just moved them to the next slot to see what would happen and it has worked since. Only recently though did I notice that only 8gb was showing in task manager, so I moved them back again and I now have all 16gb back but am getting the same problems.

What do I do in this situation to know for sure if it is the ram that is the problem and eliminate other things like the motherboard? I expected maybe the slots on the board might be faulty but after moving the dimms back to the slots where it before showed 8gb in total, the computer now shows all 16gb and has the same issues no matter where I put the dimms. I'm sorry it sounds awfully confusing trying to explain it like this.

I looked to see if I could get any screen dumps or crash reports but as I dont get blue screens from it at the moment nothing shows up in the (who crashed) application which I have used before to get information.

I have looked at compatability between the parts and all seems good apart from when I look at my ram it says 1.35v and my mobo says 1.2v. Also that when I look at my mobo specs it lists ram speeds as (Supports DDR4 3866+(OC)*/3600(OC)/3200(OC)/2933(OC)/2800(OC)/2400(OC)/2133 non-ECC, ) missing out the 3000mhz that my ram is at. and if i were to wing it and change these things I would lose warranty anyway?

Thank you very much for reading my thread and I would appreciate any advice on where to go with this.

Solution
Try the RAM on a different motherboard or try different RAM on that motherboard.

Most quality RAM has a lifetime warranty as it's rare for it to be defective.

I would like to but unfortunately I don't just have another DDR4 motherboard and set of ram lying around. I could order some different ram etc in the next few weeks if thats the only way to know for sure.

Just an update to this thread. The other night I tried the sticks individually and together to see what would happen and it appeared one of the sticks would always cause the ram to flag up as faulty during testing but to make sure I ordered a new kit of 8gb ddr4 ram. I've just installed the ram and run the test again where nothing went wrong.

A concern I have is that when I use speccy to identify the ram it calls it 8.00GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1076MHz (14-14-14-35). Is this indicative of a problem? it seems strange as this is 2133mhz ram but my 3000mhz 16gb kit which I now assume is somewhat faulty since new would be running at the same speed. When you get 3000mhz ram do you normally have to overclock it to reach these speeds?

I will continue to use this 8gb kit for the time being just to see if any problems may arise while using the computer heavily.

Another update to this thread. About a week in and have had no problems with the ram. So my old set must have been faulty from the factory. Now in the process of trying to return the old set under warranty. No matter how hard Corsair try to make it.

Call a support representative. They are much more likely to be able to understand where you're coming from.

From a bit of research it appears the only number that corsair give to be contacted on is an american number 1-888-222-4346 that just dial tones when rung. Its been days since I put my ticket through and all I got was a reply asking me to clarify some details on my receipt and to provide screenshots of memtest despit me having already spent days pinpointing the issue. You would think it would be their job to find out what is wrong with the sticks. I clarified invoice and have made clear that the ram is faulty. Likely to be a while before I even get a reply to that though.
