Asus Nvidia GeForce Silent 9600 mystery component

Solution

If you have no issues with removing the heatsink and putting on new thermal paste, you may as well do that. It can only prolong the card's life.

Thank you hang-the-nine
Not so much about the money!
On weekends I look for projects to keep the head going
A restoration would have good challenge for me
Appreciate your concern
Thanks

Nothing you can check, there is no way to know exactly what caused the issue. That is an old card, I'd just say it failed due to age and use.

Well it did blow when I was looking inside the computer for a reason why my front USB blew. As I was looking around the magnifying glass headband I was wearing and the lamp I was holding both hit the card simultaneously and the second they hit …it blew. Coincidence? Oh and the usb blew because I plugged a bad device into it.

So new card (exact one) arrived in mail today and machine working. One question more than I can close this thread. When I separated my previous card from its cooling vent, I noticed the chip paste was very dry and I am going to assume my new card (which is an old card) has dry paste also. Should I open and refresh or leave well enough alone. I am not a gamer!
