So I'm upgrading from an fx 8350 to an i7 7700k.. for obvious reasons. The 8350 is just too slow in modern gaming, especially with 80% of games being open world or unoptimized.. my question is.. is there a motherboard that supports the i7 7700k and ddr3 as I'm not looking to upgrade to ddr4.. no point.

Did a quick search and so far it looks like while you can find a couple of Z170 DDR3 motherboards out there you're going to be out of luck with Z270 motherboards. Provided those motherboards have firmware updates to allow kabylake CPUs to work, and provided you can get a board either preloaded with it or borrow a skylake CPU to update the firmware before loading the kabylake CPU in to it, and provided your RAM is DDR3L you could get it to work.

Or just budget an extra $100ish invest in newer, faster and likely higher quantity of RAM.

I believe there are boards out there, as Skylake had them, however you need to have a specific DDR3. The boards only take DDR3L, which is lower voltage than what you typically would find with most DDR3 chips. Intel spec for skylake and kabylake is 1.35v, where normal DDR3 ran 1.5v to 1.65v. Because the memory controller can be damaged by running non DDR3L ram, you don't want to reuse your RAM if it don't conform to that voltage spec. There are benifits to running higher speed DDR4 over DDR3, but mostly with the new systems it's so you don't damage the hardware.
