My external hard drive touro 1TB which has been working for the last 2 years, today is not recognised neither by linux mint nor windows 7. When I connect it to the laptop the light is on and does slightly vibrate though the light is not flashing and the drive is not recognised. The last time I used it I had to play with the connection to the external hard drive pushing the cable in and moving it around until the light started flashing.

- I have tried connecting the hard drive in another laptop and happens the same.
- I have connected my hard drive to my laptop with another cable and happens the same.
- I have connecting another external hard drive to my laptop and it is recognised and read perfectly.

10 years of documents and all my traveling pictures are there. what do you think it could be? how do i fix it?

Solution
Let's assume the worst case, an impending HD physical failure; you might have two hours, you might have no time for any kind of data recovery. I recommend taking this HD to a local data recovery person working in any business oriented computer store/fix-it place.

Solution :

*Click on Start --> Run ---> type diskmgmt.msc and click on OK
*Right-click on WD Passport Drive --> Select "Change Drive Letter and Paths..." --->
*Click on "Add" button ---> Select your drive letter and click on OK
*Note : If the drive letter is already assigned, then try changing the drive letter by clicking on the "Change" button instead of "Add" button in the above step
*If the problem still persists:
*Click on Start --> Run --> type regedt32 and click on OK
*Registry Editor will be opened
*First backup your registry by going to File --> Export
*Then expand the following key:
*HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967- E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
*If you see any upperfilter or lowerfilters entries at the right side, simply delete them.
*Close the registry and restart your PC.

Hi Promomilla,

thank you for answering, but maybe I did not expressed myself properly. The hard drive is NOT DETECTED, neither by diskmgmt.msc, neither by the device manager, neither by the computer BIOS, neither by Linux mint. So i cannot apply your solution since diskmgmt does not detect it. Normally this is the kind of solution for people with flashing light on their external hard drive, but mine has a fixed light on, it is vibrating with a normal sound like it used to when it was working. Any other suggestion anyone? thanks
