Is the CPU duff ?

Hi Guys, I recently attempted to upgrade (albeit a small upgrade) the CPU on my PC. I had a AMD A6 - 6400k and I attempted to replace this with an AMD X4 860K.
I have checked and this should be fine with my rather basic motherboard which is a Gigabyte F2A86HM-HD2.

I replaced the CPU without any issues and avoided all the static issues with wristbands. However when I tried to boot up I have beet met with lots of varying error messages relating to missing files etc.
On some occasions the boot up leads to 8 beeps from the PC and then nothing or if it does boot it says something went wrong and windows attempts to fix it (which it cant).
I have managed to boot into windows on a couple of occasions but this lasts for a few minutes and then windows crashes and I get told a certain file is either missing or stopped working.

I haven't listed which files at this point as it appears to be almost random at this stage and is different each time.

The CPU was second hand as I am on a budget (three kids and a wife who doesn't understand why I would ever want to play those silly games :)

Just want to know is there something I'm not doing or is the CPU dodgy, don't want to send off emails moaning to the chap I got it from if its user error !

Thanks

Lee

^ the issue here is that board DOES support the 860k on a first revision bios (I'm assuming his board is the F2A68HM-HD2 because there is no such chipset as an 86)

Your link points to the 75 chipset board

I would try a simple CMOS reset although in essence removing a CPU should do that anyway., any idea what errors you're getting here in detail ??
What is the rest of your system spec ?? There may be something we are missing.

Have you updated your Bios, full support for that CPU in your board only became available with Bios FEa, so if you are on anything earlier than that, then put your old CPU back in, then flash to the latest bios, then put the new CPU in, you don't want to flash the bios with a CPU installed that is playing up, FEa is a beta bios, but in this case you don't really have any choice but to flash it, bioses are here: http://uk.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-F2A75M-HD2-rev-30#support-dl

Also, before you download the bios, make sure you select the correct revision of your board as I see 3 revisions are also available.

A CPU change or RAM change wouldn't warrant a reinstall of windows, you may have to re-activate with the new hardware, but that's about it, only really a motherboard change would require a reformat and re-install, and even then if you cant be bothered to reformat, you can get away with it by deleting the driver cache.
