gtx 1080 underperforming?

So I just bought a msi gtx 1080 armor, it came today and it's installed.
Updated the drivers and loaded up bf1 to test.
1st game I get in and i'm only on 80-90 fps on ultra settings at 1080p?
The card is hitting 70 degrees celcius during gaming, gpu usage seems to be 100%.
Cant figure out why. Resolution scale is 100% so that's not the issue.
I'll test with a few more games and update the thread

Just did a dxdiag to check everything.
Found that my monitor isn't being recognised correctly.
It's a benqxl2411z, but is showing as a ZOWIE XL LCD.
Could be irrelevant but I thought I'd drop it in.

Unigine heaven benchmark result:

The unigine heaven benchmark is pretty standard when it comes to 1080's, so it should be performing fine.

Just ran battlefront and got 170 fps in ultra 1080p. Went to battlefield and got 80-90. Very strange, they're definitely on the same settings too!

The temperature is not a concern but the gpu usage sure is. The frame rates seems low at 1080p. Run a few more games and update the thread.

Did you after uninstall of old drivers use DDU to remove all configs? If not uninstall your Nvidia drivers in control panel and use DDU to remove configs. Then install a freshly downloaded copy.

I didnt remove previous drivers. Just done it and have used ddu as well. Reinstalling drivers as I type this

Okay, drivers are reinstalled.
Opened up bf1 and am still getting in the 80-90 fps region and occassionally skimming into the hundreds.
Seems to have not fixed the issue, despite it perfoming seemingly normally on unigine heaven.

Optimize your OS using ccleaner and Advanced system care. It helps a lot to shut down windows services you dont need. It both reduces CPU work and frees up RAM.

List all of your hardware specs please. You'll need a powerful cpu to run a gtx 1080 at 1080p resolution. What's your cpu load while gaming BF1 at 1080 resolution.

I've just noticed during gaming my gpu is only using 53% power and 63% makimum, is this an issue?
I have bf1 on 1080p 100% resolution scale at 1080p and im only getting 60-low90 fps on average.
This is actually worse performance i was getting with my 1070.

I just cranked it up to 4k resolution despite only having a 1080p monitor, I'm getting a solid 60fps, despite only averaging about 70 on 1080p.
My cpu usage
is at 99-100%.
So I presume I have a bottlenecking issue, although I though an i5 4670k could handle battlefield, or at least get a higher fps before bottlenecking the 1080?

Your gtx 1080 is causing the cpu to bottleneck at 1080p resolution, which is why your fps is so low. The 1080 and higher have been designed to push ton's of pixels 1440p, 4k etc, so when you set it at 1080p this results in overloading your cpu. As newer more demanding triple A games start to come out, this may change but for right now you'd be better off running no higher than a gtx 1070 at 1080p. This would be realistically the best well balanced setup for your configuration. Run this setup for the next few years, then purchase a whole new system with a 4k monitor.

Although if the issue propogates through other games I think it might just be time to get an i7 and then it should be all good for the next few years.
Only reason i got the 1080 was it was the same price as a 1070 hof i was planning on getting, so I figured if i was gonna spend x amount anyway, better to get a 1080 than 1070.
Although looks like theres an extra couple hundred going on an i7 now.
Any idea regarding what i7?
tbh i just fancy the cheapest one that gets the job done and wont bottleneck the 1080

If that's a 4th gen i5, meaning you have roughly a two to three year old system. I would wait another two years, using a gtx 1070 at 1080p resolution, allowing a few more cpu generations to be introduced. In two years time, the increase in performance will justify the cost of a new computer with a 4k monitor.

Your CPU is low clocked also so try overclocking to 3.8~4Ghz. You may need a good heatsink which I suggest the Cryorig H7. Also You should look at changing some of BF1 settings to use your CPU more. Try setting RenderDevice.RenderAheadLimit 2 and see if helps.

Overclocking made a noticable difference of about 5-10 fps.
I'm seriously considering returning my i5 and getting an i7. Would make life easier and means I wouldnt have to upgrade my system for absolutely years to come.

You should be able to get your 4670k to around 4.5Ghz, should ease the bottleneck.

No disrespect, but 5-10 frames isn't a physically noticeable difference and you most likely only tested one game. Going from an i5 to an i7 variant won't yield the results you're looking for:

You'll be able to game for "years to come" using your existing 1080p setup, paired with a gtx 1070.

O wow with that you should get 4.5Ghz. Overclocking to this amount pretty much equals or beat the i7@4Ghz. Be sure to optimize your OS and game also should get you a good deal more performance.

I got it to overclock to 4.4ghz, but still doesnt solve the bottleneck issue in bf1.
My gpu usage is on about 70-80% whereas my cpu is on 100%, so I'm fairly certain an i7 is the solution, considering the overclock has had minimal effect

At that overclock your not going to do much better with hasewell i7. I suggest a kabylake-x i7 or wait for cannon lake i7 this fall. Intels 7740K should be out this summer. Even these possible aren't enough as the game favors 8 core i7's or possible an 8 core Ryzen. This benchmark is done on the i7 5960X 8 core.

I think tho you could reduce a few CPU dependent settings. Most games go beyond the current tech so costly staying on the bleeding edge of tech. Understand with more players these numbers drop more under quad cores so the 8 cores are better in real world game play.
