1080 or 1080 ti for 1440p Gaming?

I have an Acer Predator 2560x1440 144hz display. I am wondering whether I should get a GTX 1080 or a 1080 ti. I want to be able to run games at maximum potential. Obviously, the 1080 ti will do the job, but I'm not entirely sure about the future with a 1080. Will it work for me year or two down the road? I just don't want overkill on the ti if I know that the 1080 can handle its business.

But yeah it doesn't seem like the 1080 can max everything out on a 1440p @ 144hz. I would recommend a 1080 Ti, but I would also recommend steering clear of those fresh 1080 Ti Founders/reference models. Wait a bit...
