Why do people turn off Vsync?

I was looking at some benchmarks and gameplay of GTA 5, and I noticed that everyone turned off Vsync while benchmarking. This makes sense, otherwise we might just be seeing 60 fps (or whatever the monitor's refresh rate is) all the time, but why do people turn off vsync for normal gameplay if your fps is already above 60? I don't see how it hurts you (it actually helps because it fixes screen tearing), and if your monitor can't refresh more than 60 times per second, what's the point?

Solution
Lag is why I won't use in, in fps and racing games its very noticeable to me. However I use MSI afterburner to cap my fps at 60. Screen tearing is near enough eliminated without the lag of V-Sync
