Hi,
I have looked at other posts on this topic - cpu revving up really fast on and off all the time....but I don't understand any of the solutions - I am a total newbie/non-tech person.

Can someone please tell me SIMPLY what I need to do?

HP pavilion 15 notebook
windows 10
8GB
intel core i5-4288U CPU@2.6GHz

Solution
Limit the maximum CPU usage of the system to like 95%. It's under control panel, power settings, advanced, CPU maximum....

1. My first recommendation would be to try to use canned air to get as much dust out of the heatsinks as possible.
2. Second recommendation would be to replace the thermal compound on the CPU (HP is notorious in my workplace for shoddy thermal paste)
3. Update the BIOS for a potential thermal sensor fix if that all fails. You can swap the second and third recommendations if you like.

Glad I could help, sorry I couldn't give you the exact settings path as I'm at work and we can't get deep into the settings.

I would still agree with what was said before and try to clean the laptop of any dust. Replacing the thermal compound sounds daunting but it's a pretty sure-fire way to improve temps.

Let us know if you are going to go any further with this.
