I have a laptop with 1x4gb and I baught a 1x2gb stick hoping to run dual channel to make my intergraded graphics a little faster but when I installed the ram I opened up cpu z and it said i was stll running single channel. I did see an improvement in games but not much. Basically my question is am I running in dual channel and I just dont know it? or do the ram sticks have to be of equal size in order for it to run dual channel?

with dual channel memory both ram sticks need to have the same speed and latency . if you mix and match brands but they have the same speed there is a good chance they will not work in dual channel mode. this is why they sell ram in kits and not per stick so they guarantee you that the ram you buy runs in dual channel mode
with you buying a 2GB stick to pair with a 4GB stick that may not run in dual channel mode just for the fact one stick has less memory then the other
