The system as it stands now
ASUS M4A785-M
AMD Athlon II X2 250
HyperX 2GB 240-Pin DDR2 x4
Gts 220
500 watt psu

I'm looking to do a little upgrading now I just purchased a new cup for about 25 bucks a b59 with my mobo it should unlock to a quad.

My question is what gpu would be too much I was planning on finding a 2nd hand hd 7770 would that even be worth it?

Radeon HD 7770 is a great GPU upgrade to your GT 220.

My AMD build (specs in my sig) is very similar to your build. I started with Radeon HD 5450 and upgraded to Radeon HD 7770.
AMD Athlon II X2 250 will do just fine with HD 7770. If you plan to upgrade your GPU further then look towards GTX 750 Ti, GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti.
Note: GTX GPUs can bottleneck your CPU though.
