I can't fix the stuttering happening in some games.

About half of my games are stuttering all of a sudden and it started after I upgraded from 1080p to 1440p. I have a 5820k overclocked to 4.0ghz, two EVGA gtx 980 ti's not overclocked, EVGA 1300 Power Supply, 16g of Corsair Vengence Ram, Asus X99 Pro MB. I have tried everything that I have seen can cause stuttering by updating drivers then loading older drivers, turning off SLI, uninstalling Geforce Experience, unplugging my Xbox One controller and just using my KB and mouse. Is there anything else i can do? Should i try to use my old monitor? Could it be the mini display cord that goes to the new Asus MG279 monitor, should I try a different cable and/or port? Should I go back to stock settings for my CPU? My temps are all fine. Could it be my SSD is going bad because that is where most of my games are and they are the ones stuttering, I don't think any of my games are stuttering which are on the WD Black. Thank you. Anything would be great i just don't want to send back one of my cards.

That ASUS monitor uses FreeSync technology, which is developed for Radeon cards. A GSync monitor would have been the optimal choice for your 980 Ti. Also, a 1070/980 Ti cannot run games on max at 1440p @ 144z. 1440p @ 60hz OR 1080p @ 144hz is optimal match up. Are you turning VSync on in your games?

I am not turning Vsync on in my games. Should I turn it on? I have my refresh rate set to 144hz. I know G Sync would have been the way to go but i got a good deal on this one. The only game I don't have all settings set to Ultra is the new Ghost Recon Wildlands because I get about 30-40fps so that game is set to Very High otherwise all of my other games are set to max settings and I get at least 60-70fps and up to 120 on games like Witcher 3, Resident EVIL 7, Gears of War 4. Should i turn down the settings on the games that stutter will that fix it?

Take a look at the best answer in this post: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3000889/nvidia-card-freesync-monitor.html

I would make sure the active sync is disabled, and once you're sure of that and it's still tearing, try to lower the refresh rate to 60hz just to see if the tearing stops at that point.

I thought stuttering is completely different than screen tearing? The characters basically freeze up for a millisecond or two than back to normal. i think it is also called lag. Aren't those different than screen tearing?
