Hello, I don't know much of anything about voltages, but recently my PC has been restarting itself randomly while gaming and before I send in my PSU for a RMA I have been looking at some things regarding the power. I tried doing some research at the base voltages for the i7 4790k but couldn't really find much. I haven't overclocked my CPU and the voltage seems to be 1.271 (this is while idle on the desktop, but im not sure if voltages fluctuate based on usage.) According to HWMonitor and CPU-Z it appears to flicker between 1.182 and 1.271 is that an issue? Also if this is a high voltage, how do i go about lowering it? I think its probably in the bios, so my motherboard brand is gigabyte. Also, if my processors voltage is too high, could that even cause the restarts while gaming?

Intel has a utility (Extreme Tuning Utility) that will display (and log) all the values you want, and do so during it's own benchmark test - google for it and it's useful if you decide to overclock - as after running a benchmark test, the utility asks if you'd like to share your results - if you accept, it'll open a browser and upload the results.

Where it helps in OCing is that you can select to compare the results with other users running the same CPU and motherboard - once you do that, you can view other's scores in relation to yours, and if you allow your cursor to float over another user's score on the graph, it will indicate the compatibility of that user's settings with your system, ie 80% or 92% compatible. You can choose to download and install those settings in ETU, and it will set them into your BIOS from windows

Not really interested in OCing, but I ran a benchmark and looked at other peoples results with similar motherboards, the score was on the higher side. I looked at a few other profiles but the power settings were all n/a, which is what i was mainly interested in. I'm just wondering if my CPU voltage is abnormally high for using the base settings, and if it could be causing my PC to restart during gaming. Thanks for the initial response

Are you saying your CPU isnt 'downclocking' when idle? The voltage would go down then too. Please confirm.

I am by no means a power/voltage expert even slightly, for instance my current setup (4790k) voltage is 1.181 v @ peak (4.6GHz) and around 0.776 v @ idle. (Watercooled)

But here is the punchline... Im having some issues myself at the moment and Im thinking my voltage is too low lol.

Please dont think I am being silly here but ....

step 1) If you have your PC in a extention or fourway etc try a different one, or direct to the wall or a different power outlet etc first.

step 2) Hopefully it'll be like a previous problem of mine where the socket was faulty! Not the PC! So the fluctuation of a crappy power socket made it shutdown at really random times, not just under heavy use etc.

Hello,
I was just wondering if the voltage flickering was normal for a CPU since i didn't for anything else. Apparently its nothing to worry about. The time of posting the thread i was about to send the PSU which is what i suspected to be the cause of the restarts (it is the unreliable 750w PSU that EVGA makes, i think its called the supernova g1.) Turns out that was the problem. I did try the step 1 you suggested when i was still waiting to RMA my PSU. I have my computer plugged into a surge protector which is plugged into a desk with a few built in outlets, which is then plugged into the wall. Quite a few plugs so i thought it was losing power at some point. Plugged right into the wall and it seemed to restart less in games, but it appeared to just be a coincidence, as it started again and progressively got more frequent, and happening on games it didn't do it on before. Got a new PSU from EVGA via RMA and it works great.

I'm a PC hardware amateur, so don't only take my opinion, but i do agree that your voltages look pretty low. When i was doing my research it appeared that around 1.2V is a good idle voltage for a CPU, but i haven't checked that in a couple weeks so i might have forgotten.
