Hi everyone,

I need to install the Windows XP on my old (2001) PC, here's the specs:
- Intel Pentium 4
- 512 DDR1 RAM
- MSI MS-6547 Motherboard
- 40 GB Seagate HDD
- No ODD

I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) on this PC and want to get rid of it because I'm so new to Linux that I can't get the driver for my Wi-fi adapter to work. So, I decided to install Windows XP on it. I've downloaded the XP SP3 ISO file from the internet. I've also format the HDD to NTFS format by booting the PC to boot-repair-disk and formatting the HDD from there.

I created a bootable Windows XP USB from Toshiba 4 GB flash drive with WinToFlash and I've also selected the option in advanced mode for installing Windows XP and format the USB to FAT16 LBS format because I just don't know why but my BIOS seemed that it only could boot from FAT16 (FAT)-formatted USB. I installed the Ubuntu by doing so and it worked.

Okay, here's the problem:
I successfully booted my PC to this USB, but when I selected the first option in GRUB loader (it was the loader used by WinToFlash to make the XP ISO bootable) to proceed to install Windows XP it returned error 15 and if I could remember correctly the description said: Filesystem type is ntfs, the partition type is 0xEE and I was stuck right there.

Do I need to use different program to make the bootable USB or any other solution to this problem? This is so frustrating. Other people seem to be able to install XP just fine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you, guys!

Sorry to say this, buddy, but downloading ISOs off of the Internet isn't reliable (the installation files are often modified and/or corrupted). I had a friend who wanted to install XP on an old PC, and when he tried the same thing it gave him an error.

Nonetheless, in which form are you recieving this error? Is it a BSOD, (Blue Screen of Death) a message box, or some other form?

Hey, thanks for the reply. I thought nobody would read this. Well, I had checked the checksum of that file and it matched the original Windows XP checksum, so I would assume that it should work.

The message error was on the WinToFlash boot screen, a bootloader based on Grub4Dos bootloader that make it possible to install Windows XP from flash drive.

Now I'm hooking up an ODD into my PC, burning the ISO to CD-R, booting from it. It works, but when I'm in the copying files screen it hangs. I'm using a cheap CD-R anyway, is this a problem?

After typing this, I will boot the PC from USB again to see whether it works or not since before the XP CD installation stopped working, I could get into a screen to partition the hard drive. I think the error I mentioned before had something to do with this. The boot-repair-disk didn't seem to partition the hard drive correctly. Let me check.
