Incompatible Dell Monitor

So I just bought a new gaming PC, before finding out that my shifts had been temporarily cut at work. Not a huge deal, but I can't afford a new monitor to go with the PC for a couple of months. So I bought a cheap secondhand monitor, knowing I wouldn't get the full potential of the graphics ccard, but just needing something to tide me over for a while. Turns out I should have checked the specs, the monitor is ancient. It's a Dell UltraSharp 1707FP (Specs here: https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-ultrasharp-1707fp-lcd-monitor-17-series/specs/)

The PC I am using is a ASUS VivoPC Desktop PC (Intel Core i7-6700/2TB HDD/16GB RAM/Windows 10) The graphics card is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M.

So I hauled my TV into the study (which looks ridiculous) so that I could get a picture in order to set my resolution to a lower level so that the monitor could pick up the signal. I reset it to 1280x1024 which is supposedly the right resolution for the Dell monitor. No dice.

I know that this hardware is wildly mismatched in terms of age, but is there any way to get any sort of picture here?

Apologies. Should have phrased that differently.

My thought was that once the VGA - VGA connection was physically made the monitor may come up in some mode/resolution.

Large icons, print, etc..

Then you go into the graphics card settings and configure the resolution to match the monitor.

Generally a right click in an open area on the desktop will launch the control panel for the graphics card.

My NVIDIA Control panel, for example, has four "Tasks" that contain amongst them 14 some adjustment categories.

All sorts of configurations and status screens thereafter.

The GTX 950M and the Dell 1707PF both have VGA ports. (Provided that I did identify the correct devices and specifications.)

Should be able to at least use a VGA cable between the PC/GTX 950M and the Dell 1707 Monitor.

May need to click an empty desktop space on your PC to going into the video card configuration. Likewise there should be some menu screens on the monitor so you can configure the setup VGA-VGA.

I've tried taking an out from the VGA on the computer to the VGA on the monitor. I also happen to have an HDMI-VGA cable, which doesn't work either (but I know the HDMI port is sending signal, because that's what I'm using to connect to my TV)

I forgot to mention, whenever I connect it up I get the message that the computer is standing by and I should jog the mouse or press any key to wake it up, but I know that isn't true. That's why I did a search around and found that other DELL monitors sometimes display this image when they're getting the wrong resolution, which was why I adjusted the resolution which unfortunately doesn't work.

I don't quite understand your last statement there. I need to go to video card configuration (via "displays"?) and set it to send a signal through VGA?
