Advice regarding long range wifi in motorhome

Hi all, I'm really struggling to find a clear solution that will allow me to access a wifi network, using my phone, from a boosted antenna. For example, say I'm in my motor home, and I pull up at the edge of town, perhaps a supermarket, I would like to just be able to grab my phone or tablet, and access any free networks within a few a mile or so.
I have a tplink cpe210 which is great, but it doesn't allow me to select a network from my phone, I have to use my laptop, to access the settings and a choose a network to connect to, then attach my phone to the Wifi network transmitted by the cpe210.

I also have an Asus rtac51u spare, which I was considering installing open-wrt on, but I'm not sure if this will do what I need either (and I would still need a way to use the range of my cpe210). Perhaps I'm thinking about this the wrong way, any solutions or advice is v welcome!
Thanks v much
Ben

A single totally awesome directional AP (say a Ubiquiti air grid) is worthless without one at the other end -- wireless Internet is a two way issue: transmit and receive.

Either try 4G with an unlimited data plan and a router that supports that as your WAN (many ASUS do) or park in the parking lot of Starbucks so you are nice and close.

You will never get access a mile away with just a big antenna on your end, it doesn't work that way.
