Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the corrupted registry on Dell Inspiron 15 running Windows 7? Or a work around to remove an update from 3/22/17? Stuck in Startup Repair loop with 0x80070017 error. OS was preinstalled, no disks. I've tried 5 different restore points, but the restore doesn't work.

First, how do you know the issue is with the registry? If restore point before that update did not work, you would need to try a repair setup, which needs recovery disks done. Since you did not make any, you can try to download the Windows 7 OEM disks (I use this utility https://www.heidoc.net/joomla/technology-science/microsoft/67-microsoft-windows-iso-download-tool) or do a factory reset on the system using the recovery partition. That will wipe your system to like new status so you need to make sure you have backups of your files handy.

TY, that's the game plan now. Start up repair found the corrupted registry. as I was trying to fix that I found the components file to be huge and cyclic. Tried chkdsk but it will not run.

Are you saying you have a cyclic redundancy error coming up in the drive scan? Or do you mean something else? That error is almost always because of a bad hard drive.
