I have been comparing various motherboards for a Ryzen 7 or 5 build and wasn't really adressing the fact that any board with rear graphics ports might not have those active through the chipset itself. I am wondering if the X370 or B350 chipset will make the ports fuction on thier own, or if they will need the CPU to have an intigrated APU to make the ports active?

There will be Ryzen based APUs that will work for those. They aren't out yet and won't be till later this year.
R7 and R5 do not have integrated graphics.
Yeah I know the APUs are a while off. Being (maybe less than) a layman I just missed the boat on the APU being involved until stumbling on a video review that actual made a quick reference to the boards being ready for a Ryzen with APU.

The reviewers all just ramble on about their testing benchmarks with this and that discreat cards in the system and point at ports but never say "ready for future APU".
I do have an old HD5770 ( yep that was not top end when I built last, I just wanted to get dual video out to avoid playing with a physical switch when using a remote desktop) that I can use.

I don't fully understand the logic behind the X370 and on-board graphics support, surely the extra you'd spend, you could end up with a better processor lol, as these APU's will be 'tight budget' oriented why would someone purchase a high end board, but there's obviously a market for it.

A HD5770 would work, keep in mind its not good for much more than windows desktop (and low end games) and there hasn't been a driver update for nearly a year.
I just avoid gaming (find enough reasons to not get out of the house) but still enjoy catching up once in, a long while, building something that gives me the option to use new tech or be able to game if the bug grabs me.
The last build was PHENOM™ II X6 1055T and Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H so gaming wasn't much in the priority.
This build will most likely be a Ryzen 5 1600 with a board having room for future faster storage tranfer and whatever computer oriented hobby I might pick up ... maybe dipping my foot into gaming waters?
The last build was PHENOM™ II X6 1055T and Gigabyte 880GMA-UD2H so gaming wasn't much in the priority.

I just went from a Phenom II X6 1100T to a Ryzen 7 1800X.
The R5 1600 will be a good start for gaming, drop in a GPU and go
Yeah the 1600 will also give me a cost savings and obviously the 6 (+6) processing jump and a taste of current performance speeds.
Thinking a HTPC with lots of options to move up (or dabble in tech if I feel) the Ryzen ladder since the optimization will have some back and forth between AMD and all the vendors making use of whatever they find in the new architecture. I kind of jumped the gun and grabbed a 1700 day one thinking the cpu might be hard to get but after realising the boards were not in store for a few days I returned it before the return time ran down. Now after the slow curve of info and various opinions out there it would seem that my level of computer interest is best served with the 6 core pricing and hopes the 1600 binning will give the extra overhead the 1700 got if I want to go slowly into deeper waters (guess there is an AiO pun in there).
