Hey ladies/gents,

So back a year ago I originally posted about building a new rig since I sold my old one in 2014. Unfortunately, ran into a smack in the face from life and haven't been able to until now. I am new to building it, so it will be an experience for me. 2 awesome gents originally helped me to form my build list that I have so far, of course I updated it a bit to include what I think to be a little more up-to-date. The old build list had a Sapphire Radeon 390x, for example.. I think the new cards that just came out might be a better application for about the same price.

I would generally like to know if everything will workout perfect with eachother, or if I should add/drop/change anything to more streamline it.. I'm more for functionality, and not flashy. I am debating between GTX 1060x and the RX 480 also.

Here is the base questionnaire that is stickied:

Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.:
Next 2 weeks approx.

Budget Range:
Approx 1k, but can go lower/higher to know that this build will last through the next good number of years, e.g with everything going to 4k, etc. ... though I believe 4k won't take over everything yet for atleast another 4, hopefully.

System Usage from Most to Least Important:
Gaming mostly, school work and also my security business, media, some photo editing/rendering and potential animation (girlfriends stuff),

Are you buying a monitor:
Yes

Parts to Upgrade:
Everything new

Do you need to buy OS:
Yes

Preferred Website(s) for Parts:
Cheapest obviously, but PCPartPicker is being used.

Location:
San Antonio, Texas

Parts Preferences:
Preferred Intel but can look into AMD.

Overclocking:
I'm a newb to OC and would like to do it, will need help.

SLI or Crossfire:
Maybe

Your Monitor Resolution:
1990x1080 probably?

Additional Comments:

I was a Mod for AeriaGames.. I loved LastChaos, Shiya, etc.. will play again, and trying to find as good/better games so I am open for suggestion, but I am picky. Starcraft also, Command and Conquer, etc.

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading:
Need new comp. Laptop also broke.

Here is my PCPartPicker list.

Also, my GF is looking to build maybe a 500 buck rig for mainly animation/editing, photo editing and rendering, moderate gaming. If it is possible, can someone point me in the direction for hers?

I know it is alot, but I appreciate the feedback. Thanks y'all.

Here is my list:
A bit above your list when it comes to price ($40) but a lot more powerful.
If you want to overclock, you will need a more powerful cooler to keep things stable.
DDR4-2133 RAM is something that I would avoid, especially when it's more expensive than better ram (in your case)

Your original list looks good. Just make sure you pair the z170 motherboard with a 6th gen. processor or else you'll need to flash the bios with the latest firmware to get the 7th gen. to work with the z170 chipset

I believe the Z170 MOBO sets do work with the 7th gen, as per ASRock website. I might just update slightly to a Extreme4 though or something if I keep the same specs.
