BIOS bug caused CPU Temp issues

Hello,

I'm using a Gigabyte Z170-Gaming 7 motherboard. Recently updated to version F20. This version caused issues with all the cores running up to the turbo boost speeds at the same time causing the CPU to get hot.

I'm using a H100i GTX cooler, which normally kept temps under 70 while gaming (Fallout 4, Witcher 3) and idles were about 25-28C.

So this bug in version F20 caused my temps to idle at 35-38C and games were getting up to just under 90. At some points hitting 100C. As time went on I found a work around but setting a voltage offset to -100. This helped temps temporarily. Still the idle temps were high, but gaming stayed under 70C. As time went on it, it got progressively worse again even with the offset.

Finally, a new BIOS was released as I stopped gaming as temps were getting up to 90C again. I updated immediately to F21, which seems to have fixed the issue with the voltages and boosting all cores and things look rather normal again...

...However, my temps are still whacked out. Still getting high temps doing almost nothing. I'm wondering if H100i GTX took some damage? Or if my thermal paste got burnt from high temps?

Any ideas or suggestions?

I'd rule out the thermal paste first.. re-apply a quality brand.
I've noticed before that cheaper products, and some of the pre-applied stuff does dry out under higher temps, whereas the good pastes retain their physical attributes and performance.

I have some Arctic Silver 5 laying around. I never used it on my H100i GTX, I just used the OEM stuff that came on it... I'll clean up my CPU tonight and re-apply some.

So, looks like that pretty much did the trick. Took out the cooler and radiator. The thermal paste looked mostly like clay now. Rubbed it off with some rubbing alcohol. Blew out my radiator with a can of condensed air, just to clean it out since i had the unit out. Put on the Arctic Silver 5 I had laying around and now my start up temps only hit low 50s, on startup I was hitting low 80s.

Awesomely, my idle temps are slightly lower than when I first installed the unit. I'm averaging 22-24C idling... brand new it was between 25-28C...

So looks like the high temps did break down the thermal paste. Probably explains why the issue even got progressively worse over time.

Glad to hear it man.
I put an Cooler Master EVO 212 on my last system and it's pre-pasted stuff went to clay over time.
I had this system built for me for a change, and meant to ask they upgrade the thermal paste on my new EVO 212, but didn't. It's slowly getting higher load temps when gaming (75c the most so far, so not panicked), and I'm sure at some point I'll have to re-do it.

I had an EVO 212 on my last rig, which I sold to a friend. Had that one overclocked to 4.0GHz (i7 975 exteme 3.33GHz stock)... that cooler was amazing for an air cooler. Did an outstanding job for the 6 years I used it.. at some point I put the arctic silver 5 on it as I removed the cooler at some point... can't recall the reason.. must have been doing some kind of upgrade... or just a removing it to blow some air through the rad maybe.

Anyway, played some fallout 4 later on last night... temps didn't even go above 60C. Normally it averages like 65C, so the arctic silver 5 definitely made a huge difference than the oem paste. I didn't realize that stuff was that good. Just read some reviews and bought as I needed some awhile back. Not a huge difference, but definitely noticeable by a few degrees at idle and roughly 5 degrees gaming.
